I guess I need to make my Shapeways Rex bigger and with more detail now. See what you all made me do. It will also have pterygoids so big they'll hang like sides of beef! D David - If you do plan on a new Shapeways 1/72 TRex, I would recommend basing it on one of the following 2 specimens: 1. Horner's partial "C-Rex", the biggest TRex ever found, roughly on par with the Giganotosaurus (10% larger than "Sue"), or 2. "Stan" - and his truly ENORMOUS HEAD vis-a-vis his body .... ... either one would satisfy us "bigger is better" purists ... ... oh, and a 1/72 Sauroposeidon would be nice!!!!! ;D

Embrace the smallness, you know you want to.. ;D Hear, hear. ;D Don't make me drop a 1/1 T-Rex on you two ! ;D The problem for some of us (who are getting long in the tooth and need reading glasses) is that when the figures get too small, its just too difficult to see the detail .... the 1/72 is probably large enough and I might pick it up to go with my Coloratas, but the 1/144 pieces are much too small I am afraid ... THANK YOU ! Yes, I've worn glasses since I was in middle school and my vision will probably just get worse..I want a piece I can see and admire even if I'm a couple feet away and don't need a magnifying lens to see. ;D

Well, I'm hardly trying to advocate microscopic levels of tininess. Whilst I do love David's 1:144 series, I think 1:72 is about ideal as far as small models go. It's why I'm so fond of the Antediluvians. And if David can be persuaded to make his other Shapeways pieces to that scale too, the world will have become a marginally better place for me. ;D They will complement the Antediluvians, be easily manageable when painting, and won't burn an instantaneous hole in the pocket as larger Shapeways pieces would.

Drop a 1:1 T Rex on me?! LOL Why is Galileo busily sculpting one?
Just hang in there guys. What I have seen and heard about 3D printing technology. It will get better. That means larger pieces will become affordable and detail will get even better. I know I'll be getting a new Mac here soon and a 3D program is definitely on the list of "must haves".

Remember when I first did these in 1/144 I was planning to have them in pewter as the primary material. When metal prices went through the roof I tried other ways of making them available. I tried out Shapeways but quickly saw expensive larger scales can be, and back then I didn't know how to hollow out models to bring costs down so I kept the scale the same. When I learned how to hollow out stuff I started to do 1/72. Now that Dino Rev is over I'm getting my life back and I'm learning better techniques for hollowing ( less money) and now slicing up models and adding pins so I can have larger ones printed and cast traditionally. I never want to sell stuff out of my garage again, so the prices of these cast models will be at the mercy of whomever decides to sell them for me. so there you go...
I have a couple of dinos waiting to be exported already and I want these to be the guinea pigs for the 1/40ths as well as the other sizes. Kosmoceratops and Bistaheiversor will be ready pretty soon. I'll be releasing hollowed out versions, with more detail, of the Rex, Trike, Anky, Edmonto and Alamo in larger sizes by Christmas I hope. So tell your wives and girlfriends...or parents... Or Santa...

Thanks for the update. Your stuff on Shapeways is great and am happy to hear that there will be more. BTW - Your antedeluvia acrocanthosaurus is one of the most detailed and beautiful sculpts I have seen in small scale. (I'm painting mine right now. )

Another. I might be able to get away with 1/40th on Shapeways with this guy because he's not terribly big. I'll see how high the price goes with their new pricing structure. D Attachments:

Is it possible to make your Shapeways models available in 1:40 scale David?

Yes please, 1:40.
It is not an easy task for me to paint a small 1:72 figure.
