Krissy,
We've really gotta get you out more, lol. Just kidding. Appreciate yours and everyone's positive vibes.
To be clear, I did not do the cover, but the variant version belongs to my good buddy Geof Darrow. I met Geof on the Matrix sequels and we've always kept in touch. I tried to drag the image over that I pulled off the web onto this reply but could not do it, so if Krissy, Blade of the Moon or one of you out there could do a google search for Dark Horse presents #4 and put it up here on this thread, I'd be super grateful. Sorry to be so lame about computer stuff.
Lastly, there's a two-part interview with yours truly over at Prehistoric Times magazine that might make you wonder why I don't take myself more seriously and stop watching Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies.

Hi Ricardo,
During the final episode of DR, the Ankylosaurus notices some kind of purple fruit. Is this a reference to the purple fruit from The Journey, or just a happy coincidence?

Hey back, Dan. It's a super-coincidence, lol. Everyone, I just did an online search for the cover to send it to a friend and realized that there's a new cover displayed, done by Mike Kaluta. Mildly annoyed. I hate this last-minute stuff, and that's why I don't usually lend Age of Reptiles to this kind of endeavor. When it's my book entirely I can wrangle everything, but when it's a collaboration then the comic is susseptible to outside influence. If someone can re-post the new cover image here, that would be great. I know I miss-spelled susseptibal but am too grumpy now to change it. Gonna email my intrepid editor on this, and if there's anything new then I'll post it here. Best, Ricardo

Okay, under the category of 'who cares?', there will be three covers, as per my crack editor.
Sorry for the confusion.

Just picked it up at my local comic store. Ricardo, You are awesome. You create such a sense of immortality in your imagery. Some of the panels give me this almost saddening of a once majestic world, and an impression of tranquility. After reading comics my whole life I can safely say you have the ability to put more personality and feeling into a landscape panel than most can in their whole comic. Anyway, You rock. May the force be with you.
P.S. you make the coolest dromeosaurs EVER.

Pangolin, Blade,
Many thanks, guys.
The setting, for better or worse, right or wrong, is the Antlers Formation, and I worked hard for that one because I wanted to include both Acrocanthrosaurus and Deinonychus, along with Tenontosaurus of course, into the story.
A lot of thought went into the coloring of the animals, especially the Acros, who had to be led by an Alpha, so I went with the whole black leaopard/ yellow leopard concept, and I feel like it paid off. Furthermore, since those worked out so well I thought I'd apply the whole African concept to all of the characters, so the Tenonto's a Kudu, the raptors are African Wild Dogs and the pteros (who are generic) were colored to be like Marabou Storks, which furthered their character anyway. Had to do value studies on each individual page so the colorist could know where the darker Appha was at all times, and in fact keep track of time of day and allow the Acros to literally melt into the sunrise the next morning.
I was not wild about applying the tracks all over the place, but felt it would make the whole story and setting feel all the more believable, at least in my imagination.
If I can figure out how to do this, I'll post a couple pf the color schemes here, but as you guys have already figured out, I can barely draw dinosaurs anyway, so something like taking an image and uploading it on a thread is kinda out of my reach.
Best to everyone,
R

I'll help out with posting images for you, my liege. Wow, this is gonna feature Acros? That's just awesome. I have an unrelated question if you don't mind me asking. I have the collection editions of the Hunt and Tribal Warfare, and I also own the Omnibus containing the Hunt, Tribal Warfare and the Journey. However the Omnibus doesn't contain the handy little character guides that the collections of the Hunt and Tribal Warfare did. I was wondering if the Journey had a similar character guide that I just missed out on, and did you invent names for the characters in that story as well? Thanks!

The Acros are pretty fun, and I actually drew up an Acro for the cover of the Prehistoric Times issue that was foolish enough to feature me as someone of any significance. I would post it here, but I am useless with this kind of stuff.
As far as the character guides go, when it came time to do the omnibus my editor wanted to include them and generate a new one for the Journey, but I have grown to hate them and their silly names with nearly the same passion that I reserve for any Star Wars films not released in 1977, 1980 or 1982.
So I guess I'm the one to blame for the lapse of consistency, but I kinda wanted to differentiate the Journey with the previous stories. I was young and dumb when I did those stories, and now I'm older and dumber, but I feel like the Journey represents me better as a storyteller than the previous two series, and I use the term storyteller pretty loosely, lol.
Hope that helps.

The cover for PT was awesome ! Is it one of the characters from The Body ?
I liked how they were named characters though.. I would go back and check the guide to see who each one was..especially in Tribal Warfare.. I had to know who was doing the planning, leading and getting picked off one by one.. lol The differences in each one's design also helped a lot..the feathers, and coloring really made each one a " character " for me .. ;D

Hm, Thanks Blade and Krissy for your thoughts. I might then revisit the character lists for the next series, which is called Ancient Egyptians. I'm into the second issue as I write this. To me, the hard is the main character in the Journey, but there are definite characters in the new series. The Acro from the PT cover is not from the Body. I had finished the Body at that point, but like drawing those robust animals, which must have been a load in real life. Crap. Tried to copy my stupid PT cover onto this page and could not do it. I totally suck. Oh well. R

Ancient Egyptians? Are we by any chance going to see Spinosaurus or Carcharadontosaurus?
Obviously, the choice is all yours regarding character guides, but I must disagree with your description of the names as 'silly'. There was a Deinosuchus in Tribal Warfare called Necomrancer. Need I say more?

Thanks Angie! Did you pick up the comic? Many thanks if you did. I appreciate any support, especially in this tough economy. And any thoughts, crits or notes are welcome here as well.
I mention there are Acros in the story? No Jedi though.

Only one criticism. Too short. You picked one of the coolest fossil beds to base this story off of, and it ends too soon. It only begs the question of when do we get a new full length AoR? And see? Your stories are so cool you get an acronym. Look, if it would help we would accept a story about Jedi who have found prehistoric earth and have to fend off Sith dinosaurs. Acro's with lightsabers dude. Pterosaurs with force lightning shooting out of thier eyes. Twi'lek on ceratopsian mounts. Excited yet? Thought so.
