To dyscrasia: frankly, i prefer to consider JP dinosaurs as "movie ANIMALS" rather than "monsters"... The term "monster" should only be applied to creatures completely made-up like Godzilla, Xenomorphs, Graboids and such IMHO. (oh well, that's the movie-nerd in me talkin' ;D) But judging from the errors in their design, the dinos, in a way, ARE made up (toothy Pteranodon, Spinosaurus wtih double eye crests, Triceratops with fossil horns, giant Velociraptors with no feathers, miniature Dilophosaurus with frill and projectile venom).

Really a lot of those things weren't known about at the time the films were made..so they are dated. The Pteros were failed attempts as there are toothless varieties in the Lost World and the Dilo was a baby..not an adult also mentioned in the Lost World.
But the rest are easily explained by the novel..Wu and Hammond just created what ( at the time ) looked to them like real Dinosaurs. They even had a plan to replace the animals with new versions or upgrades like software as science moved forward.
So you can explain that they were correct for the time...not entirely made up fictional creatures.

For its time Jurassic Park was revolutionary in it's depiction of dinosaurs. As far as dinosaur movies go what did we have before that? The Valley of Gwangi? One Million Years B.C.? Even since its release nothing better has been put out.

Well, the snake tongue "velociraptors" were a bit weird even back then. Thanks god they had Horner to get that straight (and too bad he still was as advisor in JP 3, ironically). Also, JP deserve some credit for making them a bit bird like and made some hints to the relationship with birds, although in the movie they were predominantly reptilian. And yes, monster like , mostly because of the behaviour.
We could rant about the overuse of mammal like roarings as well, but this seems to be the constant in all dino docs, serious or not, even those two incoming. Doesnt seem like its going to change anytime soon.

I absolutely agree Gwangi and that goes for Crichtons' books as well. They're still some of my favorite stories (right up there with 'Prey') and they're one of the reasons I got into dinosaurs.
I know it is not the most accurate representation but they always seemed so very alive. There is something about seeing a huge T-Rex foot with rain glistening on it and the mud spattered on it that makes a dinosaur seem so real. Speilburg had it right in using puppetry (suitmation too) and CGI to bring these incredible creatures to life. CGI alone doesn't seem to leave an imprint on the environment... there's no physicality. I know that the depiction of the V-raptors and Dilos set the public backwards but the movie-magic used to create them is still top-notch in my opinion.
Ah well, debate-debate it's still a ripping adventure to be enjoyed with a grain of salt. Anyway, Dinosaur Revolution looks great so far and I'm excited to see it. :3

Doesnt seem like its going to change anytime soon. When Crichton wrote the book he was still viewing them as reptiles I guess..or it was another result of the gene-swapping that went on. Guess there wasn't much research of dino-tongues either. :/ Remember in the first film, Grant and the kids are watching the Rex eat a Galli..." Bet you'll never look at birds the same way again ." I don't think any of us that saw that got the message any clearer before seeing the film. I know it stuck with me. Mammal sounds ? ..well it's all we've got really. Many birds and reptiles don't make many awe-inspiring sounds either I guess.

Agree with Blade Plus, despite the inaccuracies (lack of feathers, behaviour, proportions, etc), JP dinosaurs are still the most life-like restorations ever appeared on screen so far... Even after 18 friggin' years those animatronics still look like real animals and not just robots! Movie-magic indeed (as weaver said)

The Gigantoraptor. Just. The. Gigantoraptor. It's a bit premature if i say that this is probably the BEST tv show about dinosaurs since WWD?

They already been taken down....
Managed to see the 1st part...Eoraptors are cool but the CGi is a bit disappointing. They just don´t move convincingly. Still I liked what I saw.

Maybe those were old versions of the footage ?

I hope so!
When they were running it looked like...well..difficult to put it in words without being harsh. Must be a unfinished footage (although they had the talking heads of Dr Holtz and stuff), and the video quality wasn´t excellent...

Maybe those were old versions of the footage ? Maybe, considering the CG in the Allo's tale (from what i've seen) looks much much better. Anyway, i'm glad they've been taken down... I wanna see 'em properly on my tv! ;D

Must be a unfinished footage (although they had the talking heads of Dr Holtz and stuff), and the video quality wasn´t excellent... I am going to be harsh......the animation is HORRIBLE. I have seen the first part of the first episode before it was taken down. HORRIBLE animation...there are hundreds of great professionals out there! What was Discovery thinking about when they hired these guys!? I read something about that, they said that the Allo and T-rex episodes are made by different studios and they look a lot better.I hope...let´s wait and see. The models are fantastic. I am starting to like that "Disney style" the stories have. I´ll watch Planet Dinosaur to see something more serious.

I may as well just jump in here as well to say they were taken down because they were flat out stolen and posted. We really upset me. I found them last night and it was taken care of. Yes, CGI (animation) is going to vary. Yes, Eoraptor is unfortunately one of the weakest, which hurts me because I worked very hard to make the textures as beautiful as possible and crappy animation brings good models and textures to their knees. Yes, there were more than one animation house working this project. I agree on the quality of animation done with this piece. I think the 2 main stories will probably be the best by far, although some of the vingettes work just fine and look good. Others I would have culled, but you can't for some reason I probably don't know about and you only get so many chance with animation and then you are stuck with it. As its close to air anyway (no thanks to the person who had the gall to post it all over) I'll drop out of this thread so you guys can have at it without worry about being harsh. I'll just hang out in my art thread and post pics of my models and stuff when done. Best Hey Angie!! Don´t worry, I think nobody can be harsh about your models and color patterns. I want to see the Allo and T-rex episodes, because the animation in the clips looked so much better. The Eoraptors are beautiful, I really like the colors of the male.Awesome!
