Maybe ground hornbills would be the better analogues of troodontids. But yeah, is hard to say. Ground Hornbills, Secretary Bird, Roadrunner & other (primarily) terrestrial Cuculiformes, Seriemas, are all probably better choices as "analogies" to a dromaeosaurid then a heron. And herons don't skimp on the blue either @ Krentz - I do get Discovery Science, thanks for letting me know!

For what it's worth, the Discovery Science channel just calls itself the Science Channel. I pay for basic cable, and I get it... for me it's channel 272, where my other channels go 2-72. I do have a couple in the 200 range... (I use Comcast/Xfinity) I urge you guys to check the channels you get, because if you're in the States and get basic cable, the chances are you DO get Science Channel It was the greatest discovery when I found out I got it haha. It's almost all I watch

Not my case. No Science Channel. Guess I'll have to settle for Jurassic C.S.I. tonight on NatGeo. Phil Manning attempts to put scientifically accurate skin on a dinosaur.

I don't have either channel so it doesn't impact me much but factoring in 9/11 should have occurred to them sooner. I'm not trying to be insensitive, I have no issue with the date change but moving it to another channel that many Discovery watchers don't have is a stupid move in my opinion.

I hate to say it but the ratings didn't look good to me, I don't know what Discovery normally gets for specials, but "DR" had half as many people watching it as the "Great Food Truck Race" whatever that is. I hope I'm wrong but it looks like they decided to punt it to the basement. It would be a shame since overall I did like it.

Well that's just bizarre, I don't get NatGeo, I have to pay a lot extra for a lot of other channels I hold no interest in to get it! But I get the Science Channel. Weird. I want to start my own cable company where people pay for only the channels they want to view - they can pick and choose which channels, and based on what the channel broadcasts (like ShoTime vs Nickelodeon vs HBO vs Discovery) it may be priced differently. But at least that way people could watch what they wanted to and not have to pay a fortune just for one thing. AUGH I HATE YOU COMCAST

I know, i know... I said that i would have waited to see DR on my tv when it would have aired in my country... But DANG, your positive comments basically destroyed my will to wait so, uhm, i managed to watch the first two episodes. What can i say? Maybe i'm just a kid at heart, maybe i'm not an obsessive nitpicker like other nerds... Ehm, dino-fans on the net, but i simply found the show FRIGGIN' AMAZING! The "Watering Hole" was indeed a True Masterpiece, but even the first episode, despite the not-so-completely awesome CG in certain shots (and i'm talking mostly about the Saurosuchus running gait), was spot on: the restorations were gorgeous (both the colors and the appearance) and accurate to what we know so far, the stories were engaging ( i actually got pretty attached to that Allo oh, and also the Eoraptor family) and their behaviors, except for some artistic license (which didn't bugged me at all, except maybe for the chirping Mosasaurus), were all into the range of how an animal could behave, nothing too exaggerated or heavy-antropomorphised as some people said IMHO. All in all, a really great experience, too bad it suffered form executive meddling (as Holtz said)... It's already awesome this way, imagine how could it have been without narration and much longer, just the dinosaurs and their stories... :Q_______________________ Congratulations to David Krentz, Angie Rodrigues, Ricardo Delgado and all the other guys who made DR the kickass show it is!

Troodontids had this long, narrow snout which probably affected their diet (seems really well suited to catch fishes like herons, they´re also about the same size. And herons sometimes hunt land vertebrates like...bunnies. Same for Unelanginae or Buitreraptor or Austroraptor, which are even more heron like). Kingfishers or groundbills seem good analogies too because of the similar morphology. I associate short billed predatory birds like the secretary more with oviraptorosaurs. Not that there probably were much of a diference in their diets & lifestyles anyway!

Not that there probably were much of a diference in their diets & lifestyles anyway! I guess in some ways herons are as valid as any of these other suggested animals. These extinct animals don't really have any modern analogy we can really use to compare directly. Herons do take a wide range of prey items, from small invertebrates to mid sized vertebrates. Herons fly, and are as Griffin said, poor runners, and depend very much upon their wings to get them where they need to go. Gruiformes are possibly better in that regard, as many of those are good runners with stout strong legs, albeit, they are, as a whole, less predatory then herons. Troodontids had a mouths full of teeth, and thats where the comparabilities of the animals head relating to feeding style to those modern birds end. Herons often spear prey. Troodontids obviously could not. A Papuan Monitor has a more Troodontid like dentition then any of these other creatures. I remember either reading, or seeing (watching?) somewhere a comparison of Troodon to coyotes, which also "fits" in some ways. Using what we know about all these creatures is probably the best way to go about "reimagining" the Troodontids. (Sorry for basically derailing this thread - My whole reason for starting this convo was the blue feather thing)

Fair enough. The largest specimens of Troodon are almost as big as a cassowary, so they likely had a wider range of potential prey than those birds. 2 feet long fishes could be on the menu. The most recent consensus about Troodon dentition suggest that it likely was an omnivore though (like probably, a lot of the smaller and small toothed deinonychosaurs, and there´s some evidence for that too) Anyway, thanks for share all this knowledge about birds! By the way Just like its said in Dinosaur Revolution - Just because they are extinct doesn't mean they were not every bit as complex as the animals we share the world with today. That just seems an statement to justify the goofy mammal like behaviour of the dinos (which is comical relief, so it shouldn´t necessarily need any justification). Common sense says that they weren´t as complex as mammals or smarter than a ratite. That doesn´t mean they weren´t very well adapted to the environment.

Finally I was able to see the first episode and I mostly enjoyed it. For me the episode with the Eoraptors was the best. Only the dancing Gigantoraptor was a bit too strange in look and behaviour and the animation of the mosasaur, sharks didn't look like as if it was underwater.

I knew I could come on here and find out what happened to the second half of DR. Thanks David! I was just going to set my "reminder alert" and couldn't find it anywhere on the Discovery lineup for Sunday night. I went and checked Discovery's online site and they had info about the last two episodes but no times for them.
So, it's on the Science Channel instead. (Which I think is still under the Discovery umbrella -- used to be called Discovery Science.) I also have Comcast. But, I have Comcast Digital Cable. So, I do get the Science Channel. Will tune in Tuesday then!
And yeah Sepp, I know what you mean about unexpected channels. Like I said, I have Comcast Digital, but don't have Camcast HD yet. BUT, I checked through my wayyyyyy upper channels, in the HD numbers, and I found out I can see some of them. Weird right! Go figure. I certainly can't! LOL!

I'm a Canadian and I recorded the episodes last night. I watched (and laughed) at Survival Tactics, and in t-minus a few hours I'm going to watch End Game!!! I'm so excited. To Krentz, or Angie, or even Rdelgado reading this forum, I could go on and on about how great Dinosaur Revolution has been, but I am at a loss of words. I realize that Discovery wrecked havoc on production and marketing, but I am still AMAZED at the final result!! All in all, congratulations on the highest respect and I'm sure End Game will be the best episode of ALL!

Feeling disappointed..gonna have to wait for the dvd to see the last episodes.. darn Discovery. :/ Your not the only one. This isn't the first thing that 9-11 has changed, and sadly it won't be the last. Video games, movies, and I'm sure other forms of media, have had things tweaked so that they wouldn't be offensive to people. Kinda makes me feel as if the terrorists won, if we can't even go about our normal lives without walking on egg shells. Not trying to be offensive here, but I really hate the fact that I'm going to have to wait for this to come to DVD, before I can watch it. I don't really want to buy the dvd, as I was really hoping this would come out on Bluray. Does anyone know if it will come out on Bluray? David?

Sorry to hear that guys. I count myself lucky that I have Discovery Science. However that really is not right that they not only last minute change the date but change it to a channel that's not available to everyone. Have you guys thought about sending a complaint about the channel change? (You never know.)
